‘Local Criminal Defender Admits Addiction’

During a weekend when many celebrate the possibility of new life and redemption comes news that a prominent local attorney is looking for some of both for himself. This morning’s Enquirer reports that criminal defender Kenneth Lawson (not long ago considered a serious candidate for the bench) is recovering from a prescription drug addiction.
Ken Lawson, the self-proclaimed “Junkyard Dog of Justice,” has for several years been one of the most prominent criminal defenders in the city. He has also had an extensive civil rights practice, and has long been an important–although certainly not universally liked–voice in the region.
Things apparently started going downhill for Mr. Lawson in 1999, when he suffered an injured shoulder and was prescribed painkilling narcotics. The Enquirer describes the culmination of his downward spiral…
