She knew my background in child protection and asked me why I thought I wanted to be a DA. I told her that I watched as my kids got hurt all the time, and no one cared, and no one was held accountable, and I wanted to prosecute those people because they are the ones who hurt my kids. I’ll never forget that she looked at me straight in the eye, and not unkindly said to me, “These clients that we defend – they were your kids once. And this is where they ended up. This is what the system did for them.”

I almost fell out of my chair. I had never really thought of it like that.
