PD Set To Retire

From The Charlotte (North Carolina) Observer:

For more than two decades, Isabel Day has fought for the underdog. She has defended some of Charlotte’s most high-profile criminals.

But now Day, 57, is calling it quits at the end of June as Mecklenburg’s public defender.

Three Charlotte lawyers are vying to replace her. Assistant Public Defenders Kevin Tully and Tonja Damon Brooks and defense lawyer Aaron Michel have applied for the post.

“For years, it’s been my dream and my husband’s dream to live on a boat on the coast,” Day said. “We got a boat a few years ago. We decided if we were going to live on a boat, now is the time.”

Even so, it was a tough decision. “I feel like I’m walking away from some very important work that still needs to be done and leaving it for someone else to do.

“I love my job,” Day said. “It’s been a dream job. It’s been a passion for me to make sure people without the means and resources to defend themselves get good representation. That’s why I’m here.”
