- WI: Milwaukee’s newest assistant public defender is a former state senator who was convicted of a felony for “using workers in his Capitol office to help him campaign for attorney general in 2002.”
- DC: A public defender is being accused of “staying silent” when his client decided to run from his father’s funeral while in the “custody” of his attorney. The PD promised to notify the judge who granted permission for the furlough “the minute there was any trouble” and did fax a letter to the judge’s chambers asking to be removed as counsel after his client took off. (Remember this story next time one of your clients asks for a funeral furlough. Looks like some of the commenters could use a short lesson on the attorney’s ethical obligations in such a situation if anyone feels like jumping in.)
- CA: The money dispute in the San Francisco PD’s office continues to escalate, with the Public Defender denouncing a city supervisor’s attempt to cut his budget.
